This film-collage traces the journeys of sailors from a small Finnish port between the 1960s and
1990s. At its center is seventeen-year-old Jalmar Yrjänen, whose diaries, letters, telegrams, and
logbook entries reveal the perilous routines of young seafarers and their often tragic fates on the
unforgiving sea. At the same time, crew-shot footage captures the traces of a colonial world and
the emergence of globalization – key processes shaping the twentieth century.
